In recent years, the Mexican government has promoted and implemented reforms based on the idea that competition principles are not in conflict with objectives of stability and viability of the financial system.
Mr. Estrada presented a brief description of the Mexican Banking sector and its recent development.
Specific issues that were addressed included: (1) an overview of the efforts that different areas of the Mexican government have undertaken to increase competition in a highly concentrated market with low penetration in the economy; (2) a brief description of the reforms that are increasing competition and improving market performance in Mexico.
